First Moves

I made my first roster move, dropping Jorge Cantu and picking up Chris Iannetta. Somehow I made it through the draft without picking up a back-up catcher, but I guess I'm fairly lucky that I was able to pick up a relatively high ranked catcher. Apparently Joe Mauer's kidney surgery has left him with some inflammation in his back and he's been sitting out spring training.

Also David Price was sent down by the Rays, so I have to decide if I should keep him, try to trade him, or drop him and pick someone else up.

Post Draft Post

So we had our draft last night at 7:30 and here's how it turned out for The B Squad.

My franchise finished 8 of 8 last season (part of the reason I ended up as the new owner) so I was given the first pick of the draft. Not wanting to give that up (and also not finding the quality of player), I only picked 4 keepers, making my pick in Round 5 the first non-Keeper pick of the draft.

Keepers
1-1 ( 1) Josh Hamilton (OF)
2-8 ( 16) Prince Fielder (1B)
3-1 ( 17) Brandon Phillips (2B)
4-8 ( 32) Joe Mauer (C)

Picks
5-1 ( 33) Carl Crawford (OF)
6-8 ( 48) Vladimir Guerrero (OF)
7-1 ( 49) Aramis Ramirez (3B)
8-8 ( 64) Adrian Gonzalez (1B)
9-1 ( 65) Troy Tulowitzki (SS)
10-8 ( 80) Edinson Volquez (SP)
11-1 ( 81) Howie Kendrick (2B)
12-8 ( 96) Adam Wainwright (SP)
13-1 ( 97) Brian Fuentes (RP)
14-8 (112) Matt Garza (SP)
15-1 (113) David Price (SP)
16-8 (128) Clayton Kershaw (SP)
17-1 (129) John Danks (SP)
18-8 (144) Chad Qualls (RP)
19-1 (145) Andre Ethier (OF)
20-8 (160) Jered Weaver (SP)
21-1 (161) Jorge Cantu (1B,3B)

More thoughts to come, but it's not a terrible roster I think.

Quick Keeper Thoughts

So with this being my first keeper season with the franchise, my fist order of business is determining if I have 5 players on my roster worth keeping.

That being said, a quick look at the roster will eliminate several named immediately.

Jeff Kent, while one of the game's premier offensive second basemen, retired after last season.

Dontrelle Willis, though the 2003 Rookie of the Year, had a terrible season last year, being demoted to the Tiger's Single A affiliate at one point.

Travis Hafner, has seen his numbers decline sharply for the past couple of seasons and spent much of last year on the Disabled List, ultimately submitting to shoulder surgery.

The Offseason

A few months ago I was asked if I would be interested in acquiring a fantasy baseball franchise in an annual keeper league. Being the adventurous type I said, yes.

Apparently the previous owner of this franchise was one of those types who would talk a big game going into draft day, only to leave his franchise to fall by the wayside once the season began.

Last fantasy baseball season I had hoped to keep a journal of some sort where I could keep track of my thoughts & decisions throughout the season. Needless to say, it didn't happen, partially because I only thought of it after the All Star Break. So this is my attempt in 2009, we'll see how it goes.
